Family Tree

An enormous tree on an early spring day stood faithfully beside an aged but well kept stone cottage in the close township of Hayesville, North Carolina. I was attracted to the flatness of the green yard that served as if a foundation for a painting and the black mountains a stately backdrop. When I began this painting, I focused on the homestead feel of the stone cottage and barn. However as I painted the black mountains and the huge tree in the front yard, it took me back to thoughts of a young family’s’ first home and the little tree they planted.
